REGENERATIVE MEDICINE TREATMENTS
Stem Cell Therapy
Tremendous advances have been made in regenerative medicine using stem cells to restore lost, damaged or aging cells. The adult body contains healthy stem cells that can be harvested and used to promote healing. These therapies are showing promise for orthopedic medicine, wound care, autoimmune conditions, nerve restoration, and other neuromuscular conditions.
What Are Adult Stem Cells?
Adult stem cells are cells within the adult body that are “undifferentiated,” meaning they have not developed into a specific type of cell (i.e. skin cell, muscle, fat cell, etc.) Because stem cells have the potential to develop into any type of cell, they have the potential to regenerate damaged tissue.
What is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy uses adult stem cells from an individual’s body to trigger the body’s healing mechanisms to fight inflammation and relieve pain. Stem cells are harvested by extracting blood and tissue from the bone marrow. From this material, an injectable is produced that can be administered directly to the damaged tissue. These cells then begin to form into new, specialized cells, effectively “jump starting” the body’s healing process.
After the Procedure
PRP therapy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients can resume normal activity, but should avoid strenuous activities like exercise or heavy lifting. While there may be pain around the extraction and or injection sites, it is minimal. Anti-inflammatory medications cannot be taken, as they may affect the functioning of the platelets.
